3rd Annual Rising Stars Symposium

This all-day symposium features nationally recognized early-career research scholars who have demonstrated scientific achievements in diabetes and obesity-related research. We are excited to have Mary Elizabeth Patti, MD as our keynote speaker. Dr. Patti is a physician-scientist recognized as an expert in diabetes and obesity research, serving as a Principal Investigator at Joslin Diabetes Center, Director of the Hypoglycemia Clinic, Co-Director of the Molecular Phenotyping Core, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Data and Donuts Office Hours

Stop by The Stacks Digital Workspace anytime from 8:00 am until 11:00 am every first and third Thursday from September through November for donuts and help with data wrangling, data analysis, or data visualizations.

Curiosity Fair

The Curiosity Fair will be held on November 6, 2024 at 4 PM in the Gatton Student Center Grand Ballroom.  The purpose of the Curiosity Fair is to celebrate the role of curiosity in education, by inviting participants to engage in interactive demos from a variety of disciplines, from science to art to humanities. Tools for Text Mining Books from the HathiTrust Digital Library

What can we learn from 18+ million digitized books? That’s the size of the collection made available to members of the HathiTrust Digital Library, including researchers at the University of Kentucky. This session will introduce participants to the tools they can use to access and analyze the text of books of their choosing and begin surfacing interesting patterns and meaningful information.

Appalachia in the Bluegrass: CornMaiz

CornMaiz is a nouveau old-time family string band featuring original music, traditional, old-time tunes from East Kentucky, and unique versions of some famous cover songs. Hailing from four different mountain counties, the band features clawhammer banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass, fiddle, and three part harmonies. Performances also include the exciting traditional Appalachian dance styles of flat-footing and clogging. The group has performed at festivals and events throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and at festivals abroad in Mexico, Wales, Ireland, and Serbia.
