As a research and proposal development unit focused on extramural funding and prestigious awards, PDO staff members conduct funding searches and distribute funding alerts, assist in the preparation of competitive grant applications and honorifics nominations by providing critical review of proposal drafts, providing UK facilities descriptions, writing narrative sections of proposals where appropriate, assisting in building research teams, and providing project management services.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are established methods for use in research, but generative AI is novel in that it produces content—text, code, image, sound, video—based on user input and dialogue and presents additional questions.
