The University of Kentucky Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) will celebrate bold dreamers and strategic thinkers at the upcoming Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars.

Marking its 18th year of support for undergraduate research, the showcase is set for Wednesday, April 24, 2024, from 1-5:30 p.m. in the Gatton Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Showcase illuminates the remarkable achievements of undergraduate researchers and their dedicated mentors. It’s an opportunity for students in all fields of study to present their work through oral sessions, posters, artistic exhibits or performances.

“The Showcase for Undergraduate Scholars presents a distinct opportunity for students to share the results of their research efforts to the broader UK community, a community that is driven to seek out knowledge,” says Chad Risko, Ph.D., OUR faculty director. “The showcase also presents the chance for students and faculty and staff alike to learn more about the large and diverse range of research that takes place across campus and see firsthand the fantastic research outcomes of their peers."

By providing students with a space to engage in professional presentation practices, the event fosters an environment of inquiry-based learning while students refine their communication skills in presenting their findings, all while upholding the highest standards of academic achievement.

Showcase is a true testament to the diversity of research interests that thrive within the university community — from STEM fields to the humanities, social sciences and the arts. Through this celebration of interdisciplinary collaboration, the showcase exemplifies the rich tapestry of knowledge that defines a vibrant academic community.

“Participating in the showcase provided me with the opportunity to present my research to a general audience of my peers,” said Diksha Satish, a junior Lewis Honors College member and biology and mathematics major in the College of Arts and Sciences. “I also immensely enjoyed the chance to view the breadth of research UK undergraduates are involved in, which broadened my understanding of what research can be.”

Satish plans on registering for the 2024 showcase as well. Every UK undergraduate student engaged in faculty-mentored research, scholarly or creative inquiry is eligible to present their work at the showcase. Students can register online here before the deadline at 11:55 p.m., April 1, 2024.

More than 500 students will have the opportunity to discuss their faculty-mentored research and hear presentations from students in a wide range of disciplines, reciting their three- to five-minute overview presentations and 15-minute oral presentations.

Showcase is also an opportunity to recognize and honor the dedication of hundreds of faculty research mentors who devote their time and energy to student research mentorship. Each year, students nominate their faculty for the UK Excellent Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year award. Students can submit their mentor’s nomination starting March 1, 2024.

The event is open to the public and students, faculty and staff are highly encouraged to attend. You can find more information on the event online here.
