Enrichment Split Change for Complex Grants

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), through the University of Kentucky Research Foundation (UKRF), returns 10% of recovered Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs on grant expenditures to units with a single Principal Investigator (PI), and up to 16% of recovered F&A if more than one unit is involved in the research project. This program, termed enrichment, is an incentive program meant to enrich the research taking place within the project. Over the last year, we have created a Complex Grant Program within the newly developed Research Leadership Academy (RLA). The purpose of this program is to facilitate development and submission of grants deemed complex by nature of their scope of work, impact and multidisciplinary nature. A definition of complex grants can be found here.

As of August 1, 2023, there is a change in enrichment split distribution for grants that meet the definition of complex and matriculate through the RLA. Complex grants will be eligible for 16% return of F&A recovered from grant expenditures. Of the 16% F&A return, 8% (or 50% of the enrichment split) will be returned to the Program Director of the complex grant, to enrich the research taking place. The remaining 8% (the other 50% enrichment split) will be distributed through the standard process. This change applies only to the 16% enrichment program; the enrichment program that returns 2% of the recovered F&A on grant expenditures to the primary unit of the PI(s) is unaffected. This change will (1) achieve the purposes of the enrichment program, namely, to enrich the research that is taking place within the project; (2) incentivize PIs to lead complex grants with broad impact; and (3) serve as institutional support that can be communicated to funding agencies.
