The University of Kentucky Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) and the UK Women Inventors (Innovators) Network (UKWin) are celebrating World Intellectual Property Day this Thursday with an open house highlighting the work of UK’s women innovators.

“Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity” is the theme of this year’s event, which celebrates the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving change in our world and shaping our common future.

The open house will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in A141 of the ASTeCC building. The campus community is invited to drop in and learn more about the OTC and UK’s women innovators.

“The data that we will be providing on UK women innovators is promising, and we see where we can help get even more women involved," said Taunya Phillips, OTC associate director for Strategic Alliances. "At UK, we have a fairly good track record of women being involved in technology licensing and startup companies. With this event we want to celebrate UK women innovators and encourage more female faculty, staff and students to participate."

Intellectual property rights reward inventors and artists for their works, and encourage them to keep creating the products, devices and art that help make our lives safer, more comfortable and more fun. They come in the form of patents (for inventions), trademarks (for brands), designs (protect the look of a product), and copyright (for music, art and literature).

World Intellectual Property Day is hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the global forum for intellectual property services, policy information and cooperation.
