Showcase to spotlight 500 students’ research
This week more than 500 University of Kentucky undergraduates will converge for the 17th annual Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars. The showcase empowers undergraduates to share their research discoveries, ideas and creative works with the campus community and the public.
This year’s Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the Gatton Student Center Grand Ballroom, features 500 students and 330 presentations representing 66 disciplines and 18 colleges.
Each spring, the Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars brings together undergraduates from all disciplines, their faculty mentors and members of the community. At UK, undergraduate research is central to creating a well-rounded student experience. Research and applied professional experiences further achievements and outcomes for both students and faculty and strengthen the university as a whole.
“The showcase captures the breadth of research through the many disciplines that are represented, from dance performances to archaeological digs,” said Diksha Satish, sophomore biology and mathematics major and Lewis Honors College student. “It is a great opportunity to network with others in your discipline while improving upon your presentation skills.”
The showcase gives students the opportunity to present their work through oral sessions, posters, exhibits or performances and learn from each other about a broad range of research topics.
“Presenting research at the showcase builds your confidence to continue to present at conferences across the world. Some advantages for students presenting their research include being able to sharpen presentation skills, as well as develop the ability to discuss your research in both a clear and meaningful way,” said Boston Oliver, senior psychology major.
During the showcase’s award ceremony, four outstanding faculty mentors will be recognized. The student-nominated award is presented to UK research faculty mentors for their commitment to mentoring undergraduate researchers, providing exceptional experiences for students and supporting undergraduate research initiatives on campus. This year, a record number of 42 faculty members were nominated, representing 30 disciplines and 8 colleges. View this year’s nominees here.
The Showcase of Undergraduate Scholars is open to the public. Students, faculty and staff are highly encouraged to attend. View the schedule of events and student presentation information here. For more information, click here.
